Mildred is 83, with formal diagnoses of breast cancer, dementia, hypertension, and osteoarthritis. She is bed-bound and has chronic incontinence. Only through the assistance of her husband, Clifford, 86, has Mildred avoided institutionalization. Clifford assists Mildred with every activity of daily living. He bathes, dresses, and grooms Mildred. He prepares her meals and maintains the couple’s modest apartment. Clifford has health problems of his own. He suffers from hypertension and sometimes has spells of dizziness. Clifford helped Mildred enroll in PASSPORT home care and they receive personal care assistance, home delivered meals, and hygiene supplies. Mildred’s long-term care plan has averaged less than $5,000 annually, resulting in significant savings to Ohio taxpayers. Mildred and Clifford are also able to enjoy each other’s company, something they have treasured throughout their 63 years of marriage.
