January 2005 Client Story

Mrs. L, 65 years old, is enrolled in PASSPORT, the Medicaid waiver that enables older adults to stay in their communities. Her husband is an incredibly devoted and loving caregiver. At a very young age, Mrs. L suffered a severe stroke. She was hospitalized and transferred to a nursing home. The medical staff told Mrs. L and her husband that her needs were too extensive for her to return home. Mr. and Mrs. L were unwilling to accept permanent nursing home placement. For several years, Mr. L hired private pay help to care for his wife and continued to work. Once Mr. and Mrs. L could no longer afford to pay for care privately, Mr. L contacted his local Area Agency on Aging and Mrs. L was enrolled in PASSPORT homecare. With the adult day service available for Mrs. L, Mr. L can continue to work.
